A Stetson University student faces felony weapons charges after police say he made threats to bomb locations on campus via Snapchat.

  • Griffin C. Powell, 18, arrested, charged with making bomb threat
  • DeLand Police say he made 'references to bombs and gas'
  • He was taken into custody in Clay County, has posted $20,000 bond

Griffin C. Powell, 18, a new student, was taken into custody by the Clay County Sheriff's Office after an arrest warrant was issued on charges of threating to discharge a destructive device.

DeLand Police say Powell was a resident of Gordis Hall on campus but had evacuated the campus during Hurricane Irma. The threats were made while he was off campus, Chief Jason Umberger said during a news conference Monday.

He said the department was contacted by Stetson officials Sunday after a fellow student saw the threat on Snapchat and reported it. Classes resumed Monday at Stetson.

The threat was "specific and concerning to us. There were references made to bombs and gas, and they were very specific. We immediately took action," Umberger said. But "there was no indication that this man would do or say anything like this that we've learned yet."

Powell didn't have bomb-making materials on him when he was taken into custody, Umberger said. He has been banned from campus at this point. Powell has posted the $20,000 bond.
