A Marion County pastor is sewing "fidget quilts" for those with Alzheimer's disease.

Roland Scroggins, 76, says he wanted to learn something new, so he took up sewing about five years ago.
"It’s a very rewarding thing to do. I sit at that sewing machine a long time, but it's nice," he said.
Scroggins is the senior adult pastor at Wings of Faith church, and for the past 10 years, he's been holding a service at Hawthorne Village of Ocala.
"I noticed some of the patients who would come in from the Alzheimer's unit were always reaching to touch and feel things in the chairs next to them," Scroggins said.
He said he did some research and decided to make fidget quilts for them that he says can help people with debilitating diseases.
"Most of the people who get these don’t even know that I made them and I gave it to them," Scroggins said. "If I told them today, they wouldn’t know tomorrow. You know that’s just the nature of the disease. It’s a terrible disease."
Scroggins supplies all the materials himself and has already finished more than a dozen fidget quilts. He says each one takes about four hours to make and has about eight to nine different features, such as a zipper and a button run.
