Lake County School Board Member Stephanie Luke says Cypress Ridge Elementary School is getting a new cafeteria next school year.

  • New facility will open in August 2018

About 600 students eat lunch in the Clermont cafeteria. Autumn Makin says she almost didn't send her son to the school because of it.

"It’s very musty. The terrazzo floors are the best feature about it. It actually doesn’t even really feel all that safe. A lot of parents complain about it, but they love the school and love the teachers and the academics, so everyone stays," said Makin.

Principal Dale Delpit says the cafeteria was built in the 50s. It’s also home to the Extended Learning Center.

"It is musty. It is just four walls with nothing real to offer, except a space to sit and eat, and even that’s a little bit crowded," said Delpit.

Delpit says a new cafeteria has been in the works for years and will feature an auditorium, two classrooms and a larger kitchen area.

Luke says a new one will open in August of 2018 and said the money for the new cafeteria comes from sales tax dollars.
