County officials are warning residents in Volusia and Marion counties to take precaution with raccoons in the areas.

According to the city of DeLand, seven raccoons showed signs and symptoms of distemper. There have also been an increase in sick raccoons reported in other areas of Volusia County.

City officials also said that raccoons are susceptible to canine and feline distemper, which can be deadly to an unvaccinated pet.

The Florida Dept. of Health in Marion County has also warned Ocklawaha residents that a raccoon was tested positive for rabies on Feb. 25.

The department cautioned residents in the North Lake area to stay aware that rabies is active in the area, especially for residents who live east of County Road 314 A, south of SR-40, north of SE 27th Place Road, and west of SE 172nd Terrace.

Domestic animals that aren’t vaccinated are at risk, health officials said.
