Plant owned a seven-game winning streak over Robinson heading into Friday night’s contest.
The Knights, however, wanted to end that streak and their head coach Mike DePue, in his last season on the sideline, a victory over their South Tampa rival.
Robinson would take a 24-20 lead with 8:55 remaining in the game and seemed poised to pull off the upset. But Plant would retake the lead on an Aaron Banks 12 –yard run with 2:43 left. The Panthers would hold on for a 26-24 victory to end the Knights bid at an undefeated season.
Robinson hadn’t enjoyed an undefeated season heading into the postseason since the 1963 team that finished runner-up to Coral Gables in the first FHSAA sanctioned state championship game.
Now both teams head into the playoffs poised to make a big run.
