The memorial service for former U.S. Representative Sam Gibbons is set for Saturday, Oct. 20, at a South Tampa church.

Gibbons died Wednesday at the age of 92.

He served in World War II and served the Tampa area for 44 years as a legislator.

According to Bay News 9's partner newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, Gibbons asked for his body to go to the University of Florida, his alma mater, for medical research.

His remains went from Tampa General Hospital to Gainesville Wednesday.

He also asked for some of his tissue to go to Moffitt Cancer Center at USF, a school he helped start.
