The family of a man shot and killed by an off-duty Citrus County Sheriff’s deputy held a press conference Tuesday, along with their lawyer and a representative from the NAACP.

Last week, 28-year-old Derrick Vaccianna was shot and killed by Dep. Gregory Entrekin, 24.

“I want justice to be served and everything to be looked at the right way,” said Vaccianna’s brother, Dave Higgins.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Vaccianna broke into the home of Entrekin’s girlfriend, Amanda Vance, and there was a disturbance involving a weapon.

The family said Vaccianna is not a burglar. They said he was involved in a longtime relationship with Vance and she wanted him to come over the day he was killed. They said he also had a key to the house.

“I have strong confirmation that she (Vance) had been trying to reach out to Derrick all that day, saying she wanted him to come over to the house because she was trying to reconcile their relationship,” said the family’s attorney, Chuck Hobbs.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials are still investigating.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office won’t comment on the case, citing its status as an active investigation.

Hobbs said they’ll wait for the outcome of the investigation before they make a decision about a lawsuit.
