A man was stabbed early Thursday during an altercation in a downtown St. Petersburg apartment.

It happened just before 6 a.m. at an apartment in the 300 block of 4th Street South.

According to officers, the man who lived in the apartment was visited by two men early Thursday, one of whom he knew. A short time later, an argument broke out over the friend's wife and infidelity, officials said.

The resident and one of the men visiting both pulled sharp weapons, officials said, and a fight ensued. The man visiting was stabbed and cut multiple times, according to the police report. That man was found outside the building after the fight. He was rushed to Bayfront Medical Center in critical condition.

The other visitor to the apartment also was involved in the fight, striking the resident with a chain. That man fled before police arrived.
