A spike in rabies cases in Polk County has prompted a reminder for pet owners to have their animals vaccinated.

With seven confirmed rabies cases so far this year, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering free rabies vaccinations.

The service is through its Wellness Wagon mobile clinic, and they are offering the shots to dogs and cats.

SPCA officials said rabies cases are at their highest in three years in the county, so they are urging those who qualify for the free vaccinations to get them now.

“We’re seeing an increase in the wildlife population in Polk County," SPCA Chief Veterinarian Nicole Ferguson said. "And since it’s the cooler time of the year, more people are out and about and there’s an increased risk of pets coming in to contact with animals potentially exposed to rabies.”

Ferguson said that as rabies is transferable to humans, vaccinated dogs and cats act as an important safety barrier.  Their free shots are for pet owners who can show proof of participation in certain needs-based programs.

The first round of free vaccinations are being given out at Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales from 12-5 p.m. on Sunday.
