Two days after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old shot and killed his father to protect his mother, those close to the family are offering their support.

The shooting happened Saturday night at the Thorpe’s home on the 7400 block of Burnt Barn Avenue, Antioch.

Jill Thorpe manages Strawberry Hut in nearby Plant City. The sandwich shop’s owners say Thorpe is one of the best employees they have ever had.

"She really has been an awesome, awesome person to work with. A great manager. The best we've ever had here. It's hard to not have her working with us today.  We're all scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. But, she's an awesome lady,” said Michael Wilson, whose parents own Strawberry Hut.  He also works at the shop.

Co-workers say Jill was always smiling and never indicated there was any trouble in her personal life.

"It's very tragic. Extremely tragic. Did not see it coming,” said Wilson.

Jill’s son, 17-year-old Channing, works part-time at Strawberry Hut as well.

"He's just been a really good guy. He seems to be an honest person. In every which way they seem just like a nice, nice family.  I don't know much about their father. I never really had interaction with him,” said Wilson.

Monday is the first day Jill Thorpe has missed work in her five years of employment.

Deputies say the Thorpe’s had a bonfire Saturday night and Jill and her husband, Christopher, got into an argument that turned violent.

The couple’s son, Channing, came into the bedroom with a gun according to authorities.

Deputies say Channing saw his father strangling his mother and fired several shots, killing his dad.

Christopher Thorpe was 36-years-old.

Co-workers of Jill and Channing say they are shocked but want to support the Thorpe’s.

"I spent a couple minutes with her. I gave her a hug and we just talked for a minute but um, you know, they're just trying to get by and I know it's really broken up their family and they are having a hard time with it,” said Wilson

We did speak with Jill and her son Monday. They did not want to go on camera but told us they are still trying to cope with what happened on Saturday night.

The owners of Strawberry Hut say the sandwich shop will be closed Wednesday for a memorial service for Christopher Thorpe.

No additional details about that service are being made public at this time.
