Deputies shot and killed a man they say threatened them with a shotgun Sunday afternoon, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Danny M. Meredith, 60, had no history of violence, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said at a Sunday evening news conference.

According to Gualtieri, the incident began as a domestic disturbance at a home on the 1800 block of Bugle Lane. Meredith and his wife, Donna, 56, had argued and Donna had left the home for a few hours to let things cool down.

She returned about 3 p.m. and found a note on the front door.

"There are guns in the home; don't come in unless you want to die," the note said, according to Gualtieri.

Donna Meredith called authorities, and deputies Robert Brown and Adam Przybysz met her at a nearby store. After a discussion, the deputies accompanied Donna Meredith to the house.

The deputies found the note still attached to the door. No one answered, but the deputies heard noises inside the home, Gualtieri said.

After a few minutes, Gualtieri said, Danny Meredith opened the door, naked and holding a shotgun.

Gualtieri said Meredith pointed the gun at the deputies and made "comments of a threatening nature." Both deputies then shot Meredith multiple times. He died at the scene.

Brown has been with the sheriff's office for 25 years and Przybysz for 11. Both men have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings.

Danny Meredith worked for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, according to Gualtieri. He was not a bus driver.

Donna Meredith, a registered nurse, told deputies her husband had trouble at work lately because of back problems.
