A unique situation has come about in Kansas.

A man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple is now fighting a state order requiring him to pay child support.

The man, William Marotta, responded to a Craiglist ad in 2009 and helped father a baby girl, according to the Topeka Capital Journal.

The issue of child support came up when the two women broke up and the couple applied for state services. Officials at the Kansas Department for Children and Families demanded the donor's name and filed a child-support claim against him.

According to the newspaper, Marotta donated his sperm and signed a written agreement that held him harmless "for any child support payments demanded of him by any other person or entity, public or private."

The state argued in court papers that because the insemination wasn't performed by a licensed physician, the contract was null and void.

The two women raising the 3-year-old girl say they support the donor and don't agree with the state's order.

When the two women split in 2010, they had eight children, including some they adopted. They now co-parent them.

USF joins HIV pill study

The University of South Florida is joining a national study of Truvada.

The daily pill approved federal approval in July as an HIV preventative drug. Earlier trials on its effectiveness and safety didn't include sufficient numbers of younger males who have gay sex.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, this study will specifically look at how Truvada affects young gay and bisexual men, who are at a high risk group for HIV infections.
