The newest part of Tampa's Friendship Trail is open.

The Manhattan Avenue segment opened on Wednesday. The trail will link Bayshore Boulevard to the Gandy Bridge and Picnic Island.

The segment will be almost 16 miles long. It includes a pedestrian crossing near West Iowa Avenue and 80 new trees.

It's all part of the South Tampa Greenway.

"Ideally, what you want is an artery that runs through the city that connects every neighborhood along the way," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

"What you would you like to see 15 years from now is that you can get from Tampa Palms all the way down here to Port Tampa and do it in a seamless fashion," he continued.

He said his goal is to make the city more friendly to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The total cost is $500,000, funded through the Florida Department of Transportation.
