A Bay area man is running 50 miles in one day in an attempt to help raise money for cancer treatment.

Rafael Martin is pounding the pavement all alone to fight cancer and he’s running mile after mile in honor of his mother.

“She passed away January 18, 2005 from stomach cancer,” Martin said. “I was there. I saw her pass away so it was one of the worst times of my life.”

This monumental run is all about raising money for the Moffitt Cancer Center. Martin is hoping there’s a better way to test for stomach cancer. He says it was too for his mom.

“Because if she had had a test and they caught it early she would have been fine,” he said.

Martin will run from the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa to Highlander Park in Dunedin and then all the way back to the Moffitt Cancer Center again. That’s like almost running two Boston Marathons in one day.

Martin says every painful step is worth it.

“If it would help, I’d do it again and again,” Martin said.

Martin is a teacher and he has done runs like this before to raise money for classroom supplies.
