A bay area airport is trying to get more people to consider it when flying in and out of town.

Officials at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport are concerned that people forget about them when planning trips.

They now have a new plan they hope will increase business.

The airport is getting a multi-million dollar makeover along with starting new marketing campaign in an effort to attract more airlines and passengers.

The changes will mostly be made to the outside of the terminal.

A $7.5-million curbside enhancement project was recently approved. It's designed to boost passenger traffic.

The plans call for removing the medians in front of the terminal and adding more driving lanes.

There are also plans to add new canopies and improve the landscaping and to eventually add a parking garage.

Inside, a face-lift of the ticket booth is in the works.

In addition to the make-over, they're also starting a new $125,000 marketing campaign called: "Look Before You Book."

It's designed to encourage travelers to consider the airport before booking a flight elsewhere, like nearby Tampa International Airport.

The changes are being made to help make up for the loss after AirTran announced it was pulling out of the airport in January.

"What we're trying to do is look at us as a first use option," said Frank Piccolo, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.  "When they can't use us, stay on carriers who serve us locally, because that reinforces their need to be here."

Airport officials say they hope to begin construction by December.

It should be finished by October 2013.

Currently, Delta, U.S. Airways, Jet Blue and Air Canada fly out of Sarasota Bradenton. Starting in November, United will join the group.
