Mobs are descending on mom-and-pop businesses around the country, and now even in the Bay Area.

They’re called “Cash Mobs.” They're groups of strangers, connecting through social networking, meeting at a location and going into a local store, each spending at least $10.

“It’s a way to bring awareness to the importance of shopping locally and supporting the small mom-and-pop stores,” organizer Ester Venouziou said.

Saturday, a “Cash Mob” headed into the Art Pool Gallery and Vintage Boutique in St. Petersburg. The third cash mob had about 20 participants.

“A lot of new fabulous faces!," store owner Mariana Williams said. "Definitely some new customers that we hope to retain in our shop and have them learn about us and meet us and come more regularly.”

A website, LocalShops1.com, organizes the cash mobs in St. Pete. They are trying to organize one a month at different locally owned stores that are nominated. You can connect with the group at www.facebook.com/localshops1.com.
