A Myakka City man shot and killed a German Shepherd mix that attacked and killed his small dog Tuesday morning, according to deputies.

Manatee County Sheriff's deputies said Joan Mayer's Shepherd mix went onto the property of Eugene Alfonso, 58, in the 38000 block of Taylor Rd., and attacked Alfonso's small dog, killing it around 10:15 a.m.

During the attack, Alfonso retrieved a firearm and shot at Mayer’s dog, missing it. After killing the smaller dog, the Shepherd mix went back to Mayer's property.

Alfonso followed the dog onto Mayer's property and shot the dog in the head, killing it.

When he shot the dog, it was near a screened-in lanai area of Mayer's home. Mayer, 70, was inside the house at the time.

Alfonso was arrested and charged with armed trespassing, shooting into an occupied dwelling and animal cruelty. Animal Control will pursue civil charges against Mayer for her dog's initial attack and killing of Alfonso's dog, officials said.

The breed of Alfonso's dog was not identified. No person was injured during the incident.
