A stretch of West Ozello Trail in Crystal River is charred after a mother and her daughter escaped a burning car with the help of a Good Samaritan.

Kristyn Dominy says she was heading home with her baby Monday evening when a woman driving erratically sped past her along the winding road.

"She did flick me off (when) she passed me," Dominy said.

Dominy, 22, said she noticed black smoke coming from the Jeep, and when she turned another corner, she saw the woman’s car and some trees in flames.

“My first thought when I came around the corner and saw that her vehicle was on fire was, I was thinking karma, but the same time, I could never ... just sit there and watch that happen,” Dominy said.

Dominy said the woman was on fire and struggling to get her daughter out of the burning car, so she pulled over to help. She said the child was also on fire and tangled in the seatbelt. Dominy helped get her out and called 911.

“The vehicle was up in flames, and just the look on the mom and daughter’s face, I could never just drive by and not think about that,” Dominy said.

The mother and child, who have not been identified, were taken to Tampa General Hospital. The mother has been released. The child is listed in serious condition.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has yet to say what started that fire, but friends describe the car that burned as “faulty.”
