A woman riding a bicycle in the bike lane of 1st Avenue South in St. Petersburg on Saturday evening was struck and killed by a man who may have been racing another vehicle with his 3-year-old daughter with him, police say.

Kris Ann Jones, 40, was riding east in the bike lane about 5 p.m. when Matthew Cook, 27, driving a 1995 Honda Civic, struck her from behind.

Police say Cook was traveling at a high rate of speed and may have been racing a small white foreign vehicle.

As he entered the 5200 block, Cook closed on a sports utility vehicle that was traveling at or near the speed limit. The small white car moved from the center lane to the north curb lane on the one-way street, and Cook attempted to pass the sport utility vehicle by moving to his right, into the bike lane.

Police believe Cook slammed on his brakes when he saw Jones, but he skidded into her anyway and threw her onto the windshield and roof of the Honda. The Honda continued sliding into the rear of another SUV, which was parked in front of 5210 1st Ave. S.

The Honda struck the full-size Dodge Durango so hard, it pushed it off the road and into a tree. Jones, meanwhile, was thrown to the pavement. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cook was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition. His 3-year-old daughter was transported to All Children's Hospital, where she was treated and released.

No charges had been filed as of Sunday morning. Anyone with information about the driver of the small white foreign vehicle that may have been racing the Honda is asked to contact St. Petersburg police at (727) 893-7780.
