The man who is accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist was released from the hospital and taken to jail Tuesday afternoon.

Matthew E. Cook, 27, was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, child abuse and DUI involving serious bodily injury.

Investigators said Cook was driving on First Avenue S at more than 80 mph, which is well over the posted 40 mph speed limit, when he drove into the bicycle lane and hit 40-year-old Kris Ann Jones from behind.

Cook was driving while under the influence of opiates, benzodiazeines, marijuana, cocaine, methadone and oxycodone at the time of the April 14 crash, investigators said.

Jones died at the scene of the crash.

Cook was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he received treatment for serious injuries he suffered during the crash.

Cook's 3-year-old daughter was taken to All Children's Hospital for treatment. Police said she was in the car with him at the time, but she was not properly restrained in her child seat and she was partially thrown from her seat by the force of the crash.  She suffered burns, abrasions and contusions on her body.

Investigators are searching for the driver of a small, possibly foreign, faded white car that appeared to be racing Cook's vehicle.
