Despite the annual Sun 'n Fun being over, many south Lakeland residents are still receiving an air show.

A performance jet team has been practicing in Lakeland for weeks before shows across the country.

The Black Diamonds' six-jet team has been practicing in the area and keep their four Czech L39s and two Russian Mig 17s at a Lakeland Linder Airport hangar.

Jerry Kirby and Dale Snodgrass are two of the former military pilots who fly the jets.

"There's a lot of trust that goes on when you've got airplanes that are two feet away from each wingtip and your tail,'' Kirby said. "And you are pulling 4-to-5 gs going over the top in a loop with these guys together."

Snodgrass said the pilots know every move of each other's routines - usually before they even make them.

"(We're) Developing not only the comfort and relationship with the other pilots and knowing exactly what they are going to do,'' Snodgrass said. "And if something gets too close we have a way to move it out very quickly and save it."

The team performs at air shows throughout the spring and summer, starting April 21 at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.
