A Tampa woman has been charged with animal cruelty after an injured 8-week-old puppy was taken from her home.

"Macho" was taken from Lafonda Calloway, 32, following complaints from neighbors that Calloway was abusing the dog. According to Hillsborough County Animal Services, the dog sustained a broken rib and head injuries.

Calloway was charged with felony animal cruelty. Officials said Calloway violated probation stemming from an earlier battery charge, as well.

"Animal Services is thankful to the community for being a voice to aid a helpless pet and encourages residents to report animal abuse and neglect as follows," Animal Services said in a statement.

Officials have not released adoption details for Macho, but said he will be renamed.
