The 19-year-old driver who crashed through the iconic balustrade along Bayshore Boulevard and plunged 25 yards into the Hillsborough Bay has died.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday on Michael Agana, a college student at USF. Preliminary results could be released as early as Thursday.

Family members and friends were by his bedside for several days holding out hope, but the teen didn't make it.

Agana was unconscious when he was pulled from his submerged 2001 Toyota Camry by a Tampa police diver last Friday night.

Three Good Samaritans initially jumped in to help Agana, but were unable to get him out of the car.

Agana did not have a pulse when he was taken from the car, but emergency crews were able to revive him on the way to the hospital.

Police said Agana, who was the only person in the car, was traveling south on South Boulevard at a high rate of speed just before 8 p.m.

The car crossed Bayshore Boulevard, crashed into the wall and jumped about 25 yards into the water.

Before attending USF, Agana spent four years on the Plant High School Drum Line.

Agana's former band director says his death is the toughest thing he's had to deal with as an educator.

"I try to stay as cool, calm and collective as possible for the kids," said Rob Schoos, "but it's been hard. It's been very hard going to hospital knowing he's not going to come back."

Counselors were on hand Wednesday to help students cope with the loss.

Agana's friends have also held two candlelight vigils at the crash site, but it's still difficult because they still don't know what exactly happened.

“There had to be something mechanical or just a terrible accident of some kind involved in mechanics," said Schoos, "because he was wearing a seatbelt and he was a responsible driver he had just dropped his friend off, just a great kid."
