A gator carcass was found with its throat slit, jaws taped shut and tail cut off, according to Largo Police.

“It’s disgusting to think that somebody would do that,” said Bill Axley.

The carcass is 30-inches long but the gator was likely closer to 5-feet long with the tail, according to SPCA investigator Richard Levi.

The carcass was found last Wednesday by a woman who walking around a retention pond located near 126th Ave. N. & Enterprise Blvd., in Largo. It's an industrial area known as the Starkey Lakes Corporate Center.

The woman told police she last saw the gator alive about two weeks ago.

“We’re about the only ones here most of the time," said Axley whose granddaughters practice their fishing technique in the pond. “Just catch some little fish and throw them back.”

Police said they have no witnesses and no suspects. According to the report, detectives even tried to lift fingerprints off the duct tape, 'the tape was severely degraded and no prints were found.'

The SPCA responded and took the carcass for a necropsy. A post mortem veterinary findings report concluded the gator had blunt force trauma to the right side of the head to immobilize the animal. Then a sharp wound was inflicted at the base of the skull to sever the spinal column.

The tail was cut off after the gator had been killed.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officer Robert Scholl said most of the gator meat's in the tail.

“I just think if somebody did it for a meal they had to be pretty hungry to do something like that," said Axley. "To me, it’s just disgusting."

The FWC is asking for the public's help to find the person responsible for mutilating the gator.

"We're offering a reward of up to a $1,000 for a tip leading to an arrest and conviction," said Scholl.

Anyone with a tip should call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC.
