There is a different kind of school bus rolling around Hernando County even though school is out for the summer.

With a single green and white umbrella off to the side, you can tell there is something different about this bus. Once the door opens and you climb aboard it is obvious the bus doesn’t transport kids anymore, it feeds them instead.

The bus has been turned into a lunch cafeteria on wheels. It is part of the Hernando County School District's summer feeding program. Kids that get a free lunch at school can now climb on the bus and eat all summer long.

“The need is great and so we are just hoping that we can get families out here and kids to come out and get the nutrition that they need during the summer when school is out,” said Lori Drenth who is director of Food and Nutrition Services for the district.

She says the cruising café is on the road five days a week and stops at four different locations in Brooksville and Spring Hill.

From start to finish it took about a month to convert the bus and they used stuff that was just lying around like old bleachers to make the benches.

School leaders say children from 2 to 18 years old are welcome to climb on the bus for lunch.
