A waterfront shopping center in Sand Key is now under new ownership.

According to Bay News 9's partner paper, the Tampa Bay Times, two Boca Raton entrepreneuers have purchased the Shoppes at Sand Key on Clearwater Beach, which is home to the Columbia Restaurant and Backwaters on Sandy Key.

The price tag for the shopping center: $9.1 million.

Benjamin and Nissan Humuy also own part of John's Pass Village and beachfront retail property in Key West.

The shopping center has been the focus of legal wrangling in recent years, as residents of Sand Key's condo towers have fought to keep the center intact.  The center's owners had soght a zoning change that would have allowed for the construction of a high-rise hotel there.

A state appeals court sided with the center's owners in 2009, but residents have continued to fight the possibility of new development at the shopping center's location.
