A woman set to be married in two week is now behind bars and charged with engaging in sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old boy in a Lakeland public park.

Destiny Ruth Witte, 32, of Lakeland, is charged with lewd battery on a child under 16 years old and two counts of lewd conduct on a child under 16 years old. Her marriage plans have since been canceled, detectives said.

According to detectives, Witte and the boy originally denied the incident happened. Witte later admitted she and the unidentified victim engaged in sex Sunday afternoon inside a Lake Bonny Park men’s restroom.

"We were notified by the parents of the victim who noticed some unusual behavior in the victim," Lakeland Police Sgt. Terri Smith said.

Police arrested Witte on Wednesday night at her mother’s home. On Thursday, her mother refused to comment to Bay News 9, but neighbors with children of their own had plenty of thoughts to share.

“That's messed up,” Ariel, a neighbor who asked Bay News 9 not to use his last name, said. “In a park?  Oh man. That's messed up."

Before Witte and the young boy allegedly had sex in the park, detectives said they met at least a week before, had met in person several times and had exchanged several text messages.

Trevon Evans and her two young boys visit Bonny Park a few times a week. Her kids, she said, would be traumatized if they saw what was allegedly happening between the woman and boy.

“That's a horrible sight for my 9-year-old, if he so happened to see something like that," Evans said.

The boy promised he wouldn't tell anyone while Witte would claim she was depressed, at one time homeless, suffering from anxiety, and would, “do anything to make this right.”

"Just pure innocence being taken away from them,” Evans said. “He didn't even have a chance, you know, because he's 14 years old and she's a grown woman."

A grown woman with three young children of her own, according to detectives.

Though their investigation continues, detectives do no believe there are other victims.

Witte is on suicide watch at the Polk County Jail on Thursday night. It has not been determined when she will go before a judge to face her charges.
