If you've noticed a rainbow in a ring around the sun, no need to clean your sunglasses.
It's called a 22 degree halo.
According to NASA, the ring appears when high thin clouds cover much of the sky. Those clouds contain milllions of tiny ice crystals, each of which acts like a miniature lens.
Since most of the crystals have a similar shape, light entering one side of a crystal and exiting through the opposite side refracts 22 degrees, which corresponds to the radius of the Sun Halo.
Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist Mike Clay says it happens three or four times a year. Clay explains that today it's being caused by cirrus clouds blowing off some thunderstorms down by Mexico.
