Two teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 20-year-old man who was found collapsed in front of a home in southeast St. Petersburg early Sunday.

St. Petersburg police arrested a 16-year-old girl and, later, a 16-year-old boy early Tuesday and say they robbed and beat Mayers, who was discovered during the investigation of an unrelated traffic accident. Bay News 9 is not identifying teens at this time because of their age.

Paramedics were unable to revive Mayers, and he died a short while later after being transported to Bayfront Medical Center.

Mayers' family members are devastated.

“The hurt and pain this has caused the family to deal with," said Martha Henderson, Mayers' aunt. "This senseless loss is totally ridiculous."

Henderson said her nephew was known to the family as the teddy bear and they loved his beautiful smile and big heart.

“Jeremy was just so kind and so caring and sensitive," said Henderson. "He was just a loving young man and a lot of people he really touched. I thank God that he did touch a lot of lives.”

According to police, the two teens conspired to rob Mayers when he arrived at a home on the 3600 block of Sea Robin Drive SE in the Coquina Key neighborhood.

Police say the teens beat Mayers with a shotgun, choked him to the point of unconsciousness and fled with the young man's cell phone, wallet and green 2000 Chevrolet Impala. The car is still missing and has a Florida tag of X267AP and missing front hubcap.

Henderson said she wants others to learn from her nephew's murder.

“I hope from this our tragedy that someone would stop and say 'hey this is really not worth it,'" said Henderson. "And knowing that you do a crime, you will be sought out and you will have to pay for it.”

The State Attorney's Office will decide if the teens are charged as adults. Police say the male suspect does have a criminal record, including some felony crimes.

The robbery took place at 3 a.m. Sunday, and police found Mayers on the front lawn just after 5 a.m. while investigating what turned out to be an unrelated hit-and-run crash involving a 14-year-old driver. On Monday, police determined the cases were not connected.

Police say the investigation is still open and detectives are conducting additional interviews.
