Restrictions put in place ahead of the Republican National Convention will have an impact on University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

The proposed event zone covers a 7.4 square-mile area between 22nd Street to the bay and from Fifth Avenue N to Seventh Avenue S.  The university's entire campus falls within the zone.

As a result, university officials said they have canceled freshman convocation.  In addition, residential students will move in on one day - Saturday, Aug. 25.  Watercraft rental at the school's waterfront will not be available on Sunday, Aug. 26.

The changes were put in place to avoid potential conflicts with the kick-off cocktail party at Tropicana Field, which is expected to host 20,000 that Sunday.

The event zone is expected to stay in place from Aug. 26 through Sept. 1.  The university will remain open during that time, and officials said most of the restrictions will not affect the campus.

The biggest impact is expected to be the closing of I-175 on Sunday.
