Dozens and dozens of cats have a new home this weekend.

The cats were rescued from some tough conditions earlier this year.

Thanks to the efforts of several animal groups and good-hearted people willing to open their homes to these cats, they have a new life.

Andrea Spuhler is just one of many this weekend to open up her home to a new member of the family.

Austin is one of hundreds of cats rescued earlier this year from a place called Caboodle Ranch in Madison County, where they were kept in tough conditions.

“There are so many animals that need a good home, and it just breaks my heart to think about the animals that are put down every year,” said Andrea Spuhler, who adopted a cat.

The cats were brought back to health and, this weekend, were put up for adoption in Sarasota, Jacksonville and Clearwater.

The Pinellas County Humane Society organized the adopt-a-thon in Clearwater.

“They’re all wonderful cats, and they deserve a second chance at a great home,” said Sarah Brown, executive director of the Humane Society of Pinellas.

Each cat has its own adoption profile that describes what type of cat it is.

“We figure out what their story is," said animal behaviorist Sharon Wirant. "Tell me a little about who you are, and then we take that information and find people who are looking for that particular type of cat."

There were 130 cats at the beginning of the weekend. Fifty-nine were adopted on Saturday and many more on Sunday - making new homes for some happy animals and new pets for some happy owners.

“Oh I think he’s going to be perfect,” Spuhler said of her new cat.

The cats who are not adopted will go back to the Humane Society of Pinellas County.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is the group that rescued these cats.

The ASPCA spent more than $1.7 million getting these cats ready for adoption.
