St. Petersburg Police say they have tentatively identified the human skeletal remains discovered in the mangroves of Big Bayou.

Officers say they are of 54-year-old Thomas S. Schafer.

After police removed the remains, they say they discovered a wallet containing cash and identification belonging to him in the pocket of the shorts on the body.

The Medical Examiner's Office will positively identify the body and determine the cause of death.

There was no evidence of a homicide.

The Edna Stephens Home on 32nd Avenue South reported Schafer missing in January.

According to police, a fisherman found the body in a patch of mangroves Friday afternoon near 36th Avenue South and 6th Street. The fisherman was casting for bait fish at approximately 3 p.m.
