A woman was severely burned Friday night at the beginning of a man's crime spree that continued into Saturday morning in Lakeland.

According to Lakeland Police spokesperson Ann Dinges, the man they have in custody is believed to have caused the woman to be severely burned in a domestic incident, before he went on a crime spree that involved a burglary and an armed carjacking. Joshua Kimbrough, 32, was taken into custody around 10 a.m. Saturday after a search through the night.

Dinges said officers were called to a home on the 1100 block of N. Stella Ave. around 7:30 p.m. Friday after witnesses reported seeing the woman run from the property on fire. The officers found the 26-year-old woman with severe burns. The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition around noon.

Neighbor Fred Crawford said he heard two people fighting in the home, but that wasn't unusual to him. "There was all kinds of hollering -- screaming -- but it happens every day," he said. "So I didn't think anything about it."

Officers identified Kimbrough, whose relationship to the woman wasn't immediately revealed, as the suspect in the incident and in the armed carjacking that occurred a few minutes after the burning at the nearby Fast Stop Store, located at 820 E. Memorial Boulevard.

A 2006 Toyota van stolen in the carjacking was later recovered, Dinges said.

Police said Kimbrough then burglarized a residence in the 900 block of Fenton Lane and used a credit card stolen from the residence at the Exxon-Mobil station at 3437 U.S. 98 North.

According to police, Kimbrough was bitten by two K-9 dogs while being apprehended and was being treated for those injuries Saturday afternoon.

The victim's name is not being released in accordance with state statutes, as she is an alleged victim of domestic violence.
