A man part of an Ocala Army National Guard contingent in the Tampa Bay area for the Republican National Convention was wounded in an apparent accidental shooting Thursday night.

According to Pinellas County Sheriff’s spokesperson Marianne Pasha, Michael Wdowiak, of Weirsdale, was shot in the upper body and left hand as he and four others in an unincorporated St. Petersburg La Quinta Inn hotel room around 10:20 p.m.

Deputies said Jeffrey A. Spurr, of Bronson, was in possession of the .357 revolver when it appears to have accidentally gone off once as the men examined the gun's barrel. Wdowiak was undergoing surgery for his wounds at a local hospital early Friday morning.

Alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor, Pasha said, and Wdowiak is the gun owner; the weapon was identified as a personal firearm. There are currently no charges being filed.

"The unit is here to assist at the RNC," Pasha said. It is not known exactly how the men are affiliated with the National Guard and what their role in the RNC entailed.
