Polk County plans to unveil a brand new Purple Heart County bus on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The arrival of Polk County Transit Service's newest vehicle will help announce the city of Lakeland's new Purple Heart memorial at the current Veterans Memorial Park.

"We plan to fill the Purple Heart County bus with veterans from Polk County who were awarded the Purple Heart and have them disembark to begin the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Purple Heart memorial," said Mike Mason, Veterans Services Supervisor for Polk County.

"This powerful visual will help reinforce the importance of these brave veterans to us all," he added.

The Board of County Commissioners will read its proclamation make the county an official Purple Heart County at their meeting at 330 West Church Street in Bartow on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

The Purple Heart is the United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those who have been wounded or killed while serving. Almost two million service members have received it so far.
