A sailor on leave from the U.S. Naval Academy died early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Citrus County.

Nicholas Tarr, 21, died after he was involved in a crash on Old Floral City Road at 2:20 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol said.

According to reports, Tarr failed to negotiate a curve in the road near the intersection of Sandpiper Drive and his 2003 Lincoln sedan went across the northbound lane and off the east side of the road.

Tarr overcorrected and the car started rotating counterclockwise, investigators said. The car went off the other side of the road and crashed into a tree and a fence bordering Fort Cooper State Park.

The force of the collision split the car in two pieces and threw Tarr from the vehicle, the report said.

Tarr died at the scene of the crash.

The Navy midshipman was on leave from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis when he died.
