An inmate is facing additional charges after sheriff’s officials say he broke a detention deputy's nose.

Manuel Santiago Muniz, 29, is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.

Deputies say he punched PCSO Detention Deputy Julian Hodge in the face, breaking his nose.

The incident happened Saturday morning after Dep. Hodge responded to Muniz's cell because Muniz covered up the cell light, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say Muniz jumped on a table, and then pushed Dep. Hodge, who retaliated with his agency-issued chemical spray. That's when deputies say Dep. Hodge was punched.

Muniz was transferred to the Polk County Jail on May 2, 2012, from Hillsborough County, where he was arrested on a Lakeland Police warrant for attempted murder.

This is not Muniz's first charge for battery after being booked into the jail. Sheriff's officials say Muniz spit on and punched a licensed jail psychiatrist in June.
