The double murder trial of Leon Davis got underway in Polk County Tuesday.

A jury has already convicted Davis of setting on fire and killing two women at a Lake Wales insurance agency in 2007.

He was sentenced to death for those crimes.

Now Davis is on trial for the killings of two BP gas station workers in Lake Alfred a week before the Lake Wales killings.

Because Davis waived his right to a jury trial, it will be up to Judge Donald Jacobsen to decide the case.

In opening statements, prosecutors told the judge they have a great deal of evidence linking Davis to the BP gas station murders of Dashrath Patel and Pavinkumar Patel.

They said key evidence includes bullet fragments found at the Lake Wales and Lake Alfred murder scenes.

Prosecutors say the bullets were fired from the same gun.

Witness Brandon Greisman, who was shot at the Lake Wales murder scene while aiding one of the victims, identified Leon Davis as the shooter.

Defense attorney Bob Norgard attempted to show that Greisman's memory of that day might be faulty.

If Davis is convicted in this case he could face another death penalty sentence.
