The colorful pod of bottlenose dolphin statues is saying goodbye to Clearwater Beach.

The six-foot tall dolphins, on display at Pier 60 Park for the past several weeks, have become quite popular with tourists and residents.

The exhibition was the brainchild of the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce, where businesses and private citizens paid to have the dolphins decorated and put on display at the park before the recent GOP convention.

Now the pod is being split up.

Most of the dolphin statues are being returned to the businesses that designed them. Others are being donated to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

And there are three that are being given to Pinellas County schools.

But according to local artist John Schunck, who designed one of the dolphins, some people don't want to see them go.

"It turned out to be a lot bigger in respect to the interest level that took place with this," Schunck said. "It was a bigger hit than they thought it was going to be. And the official website had a posting on it that they were going to extend it a month."

Crews will take down the dolphins today but organizers plan to have 'dolphin reunions' from time to time.

Meanwhile, Chamber of Commerce officials said 19 more fiberglass dolphins will be sold to people and businesses to decorate and put on display in the city.
