They were wearing purple and green for Jacob Meachum, because purple is Jacob's favorite color and green represents traumatic brain injury awareness.

The 15-year-old remains in a vegetative state for now the third month since he was hit by a SUV while riding an ATV in June, sustaining a severe neck fracture that doctors think may never fully heal.

Although Jacob's parents have medical insurance, their policy only covered 60 days of rehabilitation and Jacob's mother left her job to care for him 24 hours a day. She has not left Jacob's side since the crash June 3.

He went to a rehabilitation hospital that was more than 200 miles away, but did not progress to the required level needed to continue inpatient care and was discharged to go home.

At a fundraiser at Aquali Salon and Spa in Valrico, there were raffles, a bake sale, face painting and games for kids. All proceeds were donated to the Meachum family to help cover Jacob's medical expenses.

Jacob's oldest brother Joshua Meachum and his cousin Stacy Hobby stressed the importance of the fundraisers. "It's important to support things like this because you never know if it's going to be you or someone you love," Hobby said.

"Love your family, and never take a day for granted," Joshua Meachum added.

Despite his state, Jacob's aunt, Carrie Baker, said the family is still seeing some hopeful signs of recovery. "The most amazing thing so far is that he's been smiling non-stop, even through a situation like this," she said.
