Two years ago, Brookville City Council members quietly voted to remove fluoride from the city's water supply.

But according to Bay News 9's partner paper, the Tampa Bay Times, the county health department recently took notice.

Now county health officials are pushing for the city to reinstate the additive, saying the vote was rushed through the council and without experts' input.

Mayor Lara Bradburn said she opposes fluoridation and she believes that a majority of residents no longer want it, calling fluoride a toxic waste.

However, many scientists say there is no truth to the claims that fluoride poses a health risk.

Fluoridation has also recently been debated in Pinellas County.  The county commission had voted to end fluoridation in 2011, but they reversed their decision earlier this year.
