Deputies are crediting a group of bystanders with stopping a robbery at a Spring Hill ATM.

The robbery happened 8 p.m. Monday at an ATM located near Spring Hill and Pinehurst drives, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said a 15-year-old male saw a 53-year-old woman withdraw money from the ATM.  He reportedly followed her for a short distance, then snuck up behind her and tried to take her purse.

Deputies said the woman resisted, so the teen yanked at her purse, which knocked her to the ground.

The teenager then fled the scene with the woman's purse, deputies said.

At least three bystanders ran after the teenager and caught him. They held him until deputies arrived.  Another woman went to help the woman and make sure she was okay.

The teenager, who is not being named by Bay News 9 because of his age, was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center and charged with robbery by sudden snatching. He was released into the custody of his parents.
