A Tarpon Springs woman, Karie Lindgren, 36, is accused of stalking a duck before driving it over at a high rate of speed and killing the animal, according to a police report.

"It was just really, really, upsetting to find it that way," said homeowner Natalie Paraskevopoulos. "I mean, I was choked up. I was in tears by the time the police arrived.”

Paraskevopoulos said she came out of her home on Saturday to find the dead duck on her driveway and tire tracks across her front lawn.

A witness told Tarpon Springs Police that he saw Lindgren first try to lure the duck with candy but when that didn't work she began stalking the duck and ran it over, according to an arrest affidavit.

“We raised them practically, ‘cause we’ve known them since they were ducklings," Paraskevopoulos said. "So, it was just really devastating because you become attached to these animals, almost like they’re your pets and they’re kind of like the jewel of the neighborhood.”

Lindgren was arrested on a felony animal cruelty charge with a $5,000 bond.

On Monday, Lindgren did not make her first appearance before a judge because detention deputies said she was being uncooperative. A police report indicated Lindgren may have mental health issues.

“I never really can understand how anybody could be cruel to a little innocent animal,” said Paraskevopoulos.
