A 62-year-old man was driving along State Road 54 when deputies said he had a close call courtesy of a stray bullet.

Walter Santiago, of Tampa, was driving near Bruce Lane Thursday afternoon when he felt something graze his forehead above his left eye, deputies said.

"How many people get shot in the head like that and live to tell about it?" said Santiago.

Santiago is home from the hospital with only a few stitches in his head.

Investigators said it appears as though a stray bullet went into Santiago's open window and grazed his forehead before hitting the front window on the passenger side.

"All the sudden I heard a sound which I thought was a shot," said Santiago.

Deputies said the bullet also passed near his granddaughter's head, 13-year-old Jesenia Morales. She was not injured.

"I saw something really quick brush by me and I saw the windshield is cracked and it all just happened really fast," said Morales.

"It could have been her," said Santiago, his eyes welling with tears.

Morales said she looked over and saw her grandfather was bleeding and there was a bullet on the floor of their mini-van.

"That's when I really started shaking and stuff like 'oh my gosh, is somebody going to shoot at me again or something? Where are they?,'" said Morales.

Officials said it appears as though the shot came from "quite a distance" as the bullet just cracked the window.

Santiago and Morales said they both feel very lucky.

"I am very grateful, very blessed that God was watching over us," said Morales.

"I guess I was reborn," said Santiago.

Deputies have searched the area but have not found the person responsible. They also said it doesn't appear as though anyone is targeting drivers.

Deputies said the case remains under investigation.
