Two homes in Land O' Lakes were evacuated on Thursday after officials confirmed an active sinkhole was living in their yards.

The sinkhole that opened up in Kris Lock's yard is about 12-feet-wide and 6-feet-deep, with quite a bit of it stretching underneath.

Lock said her 17-year-old daughter was home alone in the Asbel Creek subdivision in the 9600 block of Nathaniel Lane when she heard knocking on her door. She called her mother around 11 a.m. at work frantic and confused.

"Someone was banging on the doors, and she was scared to death," Lock said.  "She thought someone was trying to break in the house.  So I called 911, ran home from work and come to find out, they were trying to get her out of the house."

The sinkhole opened up while a repair crew was at the house next door, working to stabilize a home already dealing with a sinkhole problem. The crew quickly sprang into action and began filling the new hole under Lock's house, while nervous neighbors looked on.

"If one happens, we don't know if the other houses are going to be in the same situation," said neighbor Jeanneth Gutierrez.

"It's scary," Lock said. "Very, very scary. But I think that's what we kind of start to expect here in Florida isn't it?"

Lock said she is just glad no one was hurt and she hopes to be back in her home, along with her three children and husband, in the next day or two.
