The Tarpon Springs 'jitney' is getting a complete restoration thanks to the public’s donations to the Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society.

Hercules Ypsilanti donated the 1926 jitney to the society after promising his father, the original owner, he would never sell it.

The society is working with Wayne and Mark Hancock from Hernando County to restore the vehicle to its original beauty.

"There's certain modifications that we're going to make but for safety purposes. All the glass will be replaced with safety glass versus plate glass which would be original. The gas tank is currently inside the cab and that'll be relocated back to underneath the frame where it's supposed to be," said Mark Hancock, who is helping to restore the jitney.

The Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society says their ultimate goal is to restore the jitney so you can see it on the road again.

"The goal is to restore it to be street ready to be driven in parades and special events. Maybe have one Saturday a month where you can come to the historic train depot and take a ride on the jitney," said Cyndi Tarapani of the Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society.

The historical society has raised more than half of the $35,000 needed to complete the restoration. They're still campaigning for the rest.
