Tampa-Lutz native Mikey Scheerhorn will be playing in the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena on Jan. 6. And he’ll have a new fan cheering him on from the stands.

The Florida State offensive lineman is sending 12-year-old Jayden Laspada, a die-hard Seminoles fan, to the game.

“I’m so excited; I’ve never flown on a plane before,” Laspada said.

Laspada has been fighting a rare form of cancer since March. After her last round of chemo, she learned she won an essay contest through the Children’s Cancer Center in Tampa.

Mikey Scheerhorn provided part of his ticket allotment to her and her family. But he still had to raise money to make sure Laspada’s family didn’t have to worry about finances in Pasadena.

He started this web page to raise money: http://www.crowdrise.com/ccckidtobcs

In less than 24 hours, donations poured in from across the nation, totaling more than $11,000.

It’s a cause close to Scheerhorn’s heart. His older brother Daniel was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer when he was 7 years-old. Now 21 years old and cancer free, Daniel is excited to see his brother making a difference in another child’s life.

“I’m so proud. I know he’s a really good guy," Daniel Scheerhorn said. "I didn’t know he had something like this in him. I’m so glad I was able to see it. And be a part of it.”

“That’s Mike’s inspiration," said Jeff Scheerhorn, Mikey's dad. "He didn’t really share that with us, he just internalized it. And it manifested itself in this gesture. I’m pretty proud of him."

The entire Scheerhorn family will be in Pasadena to see the sophomore run through the tunnel, a childhood dream of his. And they now have a new friend to cheer with in the stands.

But until Laspada meets the man who made it all possible, she has one message for Mikey: “I want to say, 'go win the game!' ” she said.

Laspada said Derrick Brooks was her favorite Seminoles player. That is, until Scheerhorn came along.

This will be the first FSU game she’ll attend. And Laspada picked a good one. Her team will be playing for the championship against Auburn.

This was all made possible through the Children’s Cancer Center in Tampa. The organization helped both families while they were battling the disease.

The Children’s Cancer Center has more than 20 programs to help children and their families through the battle. For more information, can visit http://www.childrenscancercenter.org/.
