A major entertainment complex that's part golf, part high-tech gimmickry and part upscale sports bar is coming to the Brandon area.

TopGolf Tampa is scheduled to open next fall at 10690 Palm River Road, near the intersection of I-75 and the Selmon Expressway. It's across from where a Bass Pro Shops outdoors mega-store is going up.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan said he welcomes the facility, which will be built over the objections of some local business owners who opposed attracting Bass Pro Shops and TopGolf.

“This world-class sports and entertainment experience will be joining its neighbor, Bass Pro, as part of an overall regional entertainment destination venue," Hagan said. "In less than a year from the Board’s engagement to assist in roadway improvements, the validation of that decision comes with this second announced project initiative with TopGolf.”

TopGolf bills itself as the only entertainment center of its kind, offering "competitive golfing games for all ages and skill levels and advanced technology to track every player’s shots." Those who don't want to play can enjoy an "upscale, laid-back ambience that boasts more than 230 high-definition flat-screen TVs" and an extensive food and beverage menu.

Hillborough County will be the 14th location for TopGolf, which has centers in ritzy suburbs of Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Phoenix, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, as well as three locations in the United Kingdom. Nearly half of TopGolf guests describe themselves as non-golfers, the company said.

“Tampa is undeniably one of the best outdoor cities in America, making it an ideal location for a year-round recreational activity like TopGolf,” TopGolf Chief Development Officer Randy Starr said in a statement.

The new three-level location – constructed by ARCO/Murray – will include about 3,000 square feet of private event space and 102 climate-controlled hitting bays that can host up to six players at one time. Players hit golf balls containing computer microchips that track each shot’s accuracy and distance while also awarding points for hitting targets on the outfield.
