A head-on crash sent a Pasco County sheriff's deputy and another driver to a hospital Friday night, authorities said.

The collision happened around 11:45 p.m. near Moon Lake Road and Havana Avenue in New Port Richey. The roadway is winding and dark at night and has been the site of numerous crashes.

According to authorities, deputy William Davis, 22, suffered a broken elbow and leg. The other driver, Nicholas Lukeas, 29, of New Port Richey is "banged up pretty good" but will be OK, his father said.

A Florida Highway Patrol report said Lukeas was attempting to make a left turn from Moonlake Road onto Havana Avenue and failed to yield the right-of-way to Davis' cruiser. The cruiser then struck Lukeas' 2000 Subaru Outback.

Lukeas was cited for failure to yield the right of way and not having proof of insurance. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and alcohol use was not suspected.
