A 12-year-old Auburndale boy is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a city garbage truck Monday morning.

Police say Chance Bigelow was riding his bicycle northbound on a sidewalk along Main Street when the garbage truck traveling the same direction on the street turned right into a parking lot. Investigators believe the truck knocked Bigelow from his bike and may have run over a leg and his hips.

Bigelow was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where he underwent surgery. He was expected to recover.

Bigelow was on his way to Stambaugh Middle School at the time of the accident. Principal Robert Hartley said the school brought in a crisis team to meet with classmates.

"The team would then go from class to class just in the 6th grade just to explain what happened," Hartley said. "Not a lot of details but to just put the kids at ease to show we were on top of it so they didn't have to guess and worry about anything."

Police say there is a good chance that some type of charge will be filed as a result of the accident.
